McKendree University Student Kenny O'Dell is on a Mission in Detroit

2013 Mar 7

McKendree University student Kenny O'Dell of Carlyle, Ill. is spending his spring break on a mission trip to Detroit, March 10-17.

O'Dell, a sophomore biology pre-professional major, is among a group of students volunteering with the Motown Mission Experience, a United Methodist organization working for economic disaster recovery in downtown Detroit. He is working with various Motown partners to do clean-up, painting, plastering, small repairs and light construction of homes in downtown neighborhoods. The group will also work with local ministries to prepare greenhouses and gardens to grow produce for the food pantries.

They plan to spend a day or two reading to children in a local school, and make time to explore a little of Detroit's urban culture with other visiting college students.

McKendree University was recently named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic responsibility. For more information, visit www.mckendree.edu
