Harry Uyehara Travels to Nicaragua

2017 Jun 29

Harry Uyehara learned about Nicaraguan culture and social realities with other McKendree University students, staff and alumni in May through Entre Culturas (Between Cultures). The group spent five days in the capital city of Managua, with five days in home stays in rural communities.

In San Francisco Libre, students learned about domestic violence from Women and Community and worked alongside Youth Network Against Violence members to build a water trench in two areas. In San Marcos, they visited a home for orphan children and planted trees. To learn more about the country, the group visited other nonprofits, a sweatshop, a fair trade store, talked with long-term volunteers, went to a Christian Based Community service, and attended a historical tour of Managua. The trip was organized by McKendree University's Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service and the Center for Faith and Spirituality.
