Diana Nevarez is 2017 MLK Humanitarian Award Winner

2017 Jan 27

Diana Nevarez, a senior sociology major and ethnic studies minor, is a 2017 McKendree University Humanitarian Award winner. The annual award was presented on Jan. 26 during a chapel service to celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recipients are those who demonstrate understanding and tolerance, embrace humanitarian principles and ideals, and lead or participate in service programs that reflect these ideals.

Diana came from El Paso to McKendree University's Lebanon, Ill., campus to join its first women's wrestling team. As president of the university's chapter of Define American and a Change Ambassador, she works to share stories, particularly those of immigrants. After she graduates in May, she aspires to go to graduate school and eventually to pursue a career in public service, confronting social issues and fighting for social justice.
