Anthony Venditto Studies at the University of Florence

2013 Sep 6

McKendree University sophomore Anthony Venditto is studying in "the cradle of the Renaissance" at the University of Florence in Tuscany this fall. The chemistry major from Troy, Ill., is the first McKendree student to spend a semester in Italy as part of an Institute for Study Abroad program.

Anthony is completing several of his general elective requirements at the university, which traces its origins to the 14th century. It is located along the Arno River amid the city's famous traditional architecture and modern shops. On weekends, he may travel to Rome, Assisi, the hill towns of central Italy, and the northeastern coast.

"My grandmother has told me many stories about Italy," he said. "Her parents immigrated to America when she was little and never got to learn English. I would really love to be able to speak to her in Italian and remind her of the days when she was young. I think she would like for me to see the cultural differences and know that I don't have to stop going to school to experience it."
